Royal Enfield Flying Flea could be the name of the brand’s first-ever electric motorcycle set to debut early next month

Royal Enfield appears to be planning to unveil its first-ever electric motorcycle on November 4, 2024 – right on time for the EICMA show in Milan. In the past, we have seen the Chennai-based manufacturer unveiling close-to-production concepts at the Italian motor show and this time around, the near-production version of its maiden zero-emission offering could be showcased.

It is no secret that Royal Enfield has been developing a range of electric motorcycles for the Indian and global markets. Previously, we showed you images of the design patent of the upcoming motorcycle and like every other RE out there, it will boast a retro stance with modern styling elements and the teaser replicates more or less similar design cues including the aluminium girders.

The teaser released by Royal Enfield shows a motorcycle hung from a parachute, floating above the horizon and this makes us wonder whether it will be the Flying Flea that was trademarked a long while ago. The design patent points the finger at circular headlamps, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a floating instrument cluster, alloy wheels, a cantilever seat, etc.

The Royal Enfield Flying Flea, also known as the WD/RE, was a lightweight motorcycle used by British paratroopers during World War II. It was designed to be air-dropped with troops and could navigate rough terrain with ease. Powered by a 125 cc two-stroke engine, it weighed just 56 kg, making it highly portable. Its compact size allowed it to fit into a special parachute cradle, and it was widely praised for its durability.

The Flying Flea became a symbol of Royal Enfield’s contribution to military efforts and remains a historic model today. The teaser strongly commends that the Flying Flea is making a comeback, perhaps with a modern electric powertrain. It could use a large battery pack and a powerful electric motor but no official specifications have been revealed yet.

The brand could also introduce a new 650 cc scrambler, christened the Interceptor Bear 650, at the EICMA show and both these motorcycles may as well make their India debut at the second edition of MotoVerse soon.
